How to lose weight and keep it off

I am often asked what my secret is. How did I lose so much weight, and keep it off long term?

And my answer is, hard work and understanding what works for me and what my body needs.

Unfortunately there are no quick fixes, fad diets or magic pills if you want lasting results.

Lasting results come from dedication. Making small, realistic and sustainable changes over time, that in turn become a lifestyle change, not just another diet or fitness regime that you don't enjoy.

The reality is, it is hard, it is going to take time, but once you understand that, no one can stop you.

We are all guilty of looking for the easy option. This is why the health and fitness industry is one of the biggest industries in the world. Why every week, there is a new diet and exercise craze which promises to change our life.

Sure they can provide quick wins, I have done loads of challenges and fads over the years. But let’s be honest. If you know going in, you could not live without enjoying another slice of bread or chocolate ever again, who are we kidding it is not going to last long term.

Sooner or later, after all your hard work, eventually it gets too hard to sustain. We revert back to our old ways and give up… and more often than not, we end up worse off than when we started, as once our body starts enjoying all the foods again, without control the kilos start packing back on.

The trick is, YOU need to find a balance.

After years of experience and undertaking the hard yards myself. My belief is that you need three key things, if you want to be successful on your health and fitness journey.


1. Understanding. Understand what your body needs.

This is the most important step of them all. Often we think we are eating healthy, doing the right things, but are we really?

What does "eating healthy" really mean?Without the guidance of an industry professional to help you learn what food and exercise your body needs to achieve your goals, you will never make the progress you want. As you will always be guessing.

Change should not mean cutting out all the foods you love. Its about understand what your body needs and eating moderation. Lasting results will only come if you take a realistic approach which allows you to still enjoy your life and your food!

2. Mindset, is such a powerful thing. You have to want and be ready to make a change because it is going to take some work.

Health and fitness needs to be fun, enjoyable and become a way of life if you’re going to stick with it.

Think about what you really want and set a goal.


We all want to lose weight, but dig deeper... What does that mean to you?

Maybe it’s to feel better about yourself. Feel healthier, fit into that pair of jeans, or tackle that marathon you always wanted.

Whatever it is, a realistic and achievable goal is something to work towards, and will help keep you motivated along the way.

There is no better feeling than seeing your hard work paying off when you get there!


And I should know. 5 years ago I hated running. But, I decided I wanted to give it a go, slow and steady I learnt to enjoy it. Walked a little less, ran a little more and now running is one of my favourite things to do.

3. Support, the support of your family, friends and your trainer will make all the difference. Support helps keep you accountable and keeps you going when times get tough.

That is why personal training and group fitness often sees better results than just going to the gym. As you are held accountable.

Training with someone else, this is another great way to last the distance, as you are in it together. So why not grab a friend or your partner and set a goal together.

Ultimately remember, losing weight is a marathon not a sprint. Lasting change will come, and you will be able to sustain them when you enjoy the process.

Once you realise that, and are ready to make some realistic changes. No one can stop you!
