With Christmas around the corner. It is easy to get caught up in all the madness that is the silly season, and let your health and fitness slide.

But, Christmas doesn’t have to be all or nothing. It is possible to have your cake and eat it too, if you stick to a few simple steps.

1. Don’t arrive at events hungry.

As the saying goes, "don't go shopping on an empty stomach", the same principle applies here.

After a busy day racing around, we often arrive at events hungry. Ready to devour the first plate of greasy treats we can find!

Instead, have a snack before heading out.

Not only will this prevent you from overeating as you won't be starving. It will as allow you to make better choices.

✨Hot tip- Plan ahead and make sure you have a range of easy, healthy snacks available. It could be as simple as grabbing an apple on the way out the door.

2. Put a new spin on your favourite treats.

Although often easier said than done. When your body is sleep deprived it produces hormones that actually tell you to eat more!

And your body produces less leptin, which tells the body it's full.

Sleep also helps our bodies function better and helps decrease stress, so when the opportunity arises to grab a few extra ZZ’s take it!

Your body and your appetite will thank you for it.

4. Eat protein rich food first.

Protein! Protein! Protein! If you train with me you will know that protein is such an important part of any balanced diet.

But did you know it is also a great way to avoid over eating?

Why? Protein helps you feel fuller for longer, so instead of snacking the night away, take advantage of all the great Christmas roasts, seafood and veggies available, and have a meal instead of snacking.

5. Serve yourself.

A great way to avoid over eating, whilst keeping family and friends happy is by serving yourself.

This allows you to try a little of everything and only get what you want, so you don’t feel obligated to finish a huge plate of food served up by someone else.

✨Hot tip- grab a smaller plate! Not only will you not eat as much, you won't notice as you will still have a full plate.

We all know that water is a must. It helps flush​ out toxins, helps your skin stay bright and fresh, not to mention it keeps you hydrated on these hot summer days.

But if you are not a water fan it can be hard to ensure you are getting enough each day.

So why not try spicing it up with some summer fruit, or a slice of lemon.

✨Hot tip- Keep a bottle of water with you, so you remember to drink it throughout the day. And you can also keep track of how much your drinking.

7. Take a breather before going back for seconds.

Let's face it, with the abundance of tasty treats at Christmas it is hard not to get carried away.

However, by giving your body a small break (10- 20 minutes) before going back for seconds, you allow your food to properly reach your stomach and realise it's full, preventing overeating.

8. Keep Moving.

Look for fun ways to keep active, especially after a big lunch or dinner. Go for a walk, play some sport with your friends & family, anything to get yourself moving.

It’s not only good for your waistline, it helps the digestive system process your food quicker helping stabilise your blood insulin levels so you have more energy!

9. Watch what you drink.

Excess Alcohol and soft drinks can be an easy way to add the kilos over the holiday season, but it is possible to still have a few drinks and not pile on the pounds.

✔ Enjoy alcohol in moderation.

✔ Have a glass of water between drinks. This means you drink less & also helps keep the body hydrated, lessening next day hangovers.

✔ Look for healthier choices. Mix spirits with Soda or Mineral water instead of soft drinks & add some fruit, lemon or lime for extra flavour.

✔ Drink low-carb beers

✔ Offer to be the designated driver & take the opportunity to have a night off.
